Over-the-Board Chess Returns June 16-20

Nevada is relaxing (but not eliminating) restrictions, and we are confident that we can return to over the board chess with the Chess Event of the Year.

We have delayed accepting entries until we were (nearly) certain that we could proceed. Players who have carried their entries over from previous events will be added to the entry list manually so please be patient as we are doing this one at a time.

    • We intend to follow all state, local and CDC recommendations in effect at the time. Masks are likely to be mandatory, and we will space the tables with 1 game per board whether required or not. Other precautions will be listed on our FAQ soon.

    • The Chess Festival is scheduled and hotels are booked years in advance. So the real question is “are you going to cancel again?” and the answer is no. We will do everything possible to keep our players safe, and we anticipate that enough players will be vaccinated by June to make the tournament viable. We will be posting our safety precautions in our FAQ soon.

We understand that some players will be unable or unwilling to attend an event in June. We hope to see them next year, or at other events which we may run in fall. Other players are chomping at the bit for opportunities to play and are willing to abide by our safety precautions.

  1. Will you require temperature to be taken each day (with arm stamp identifier good for that day) for Players and Spectators in order to enter playing area? In the past I have always been troubled playing against or physically near a person who appears to be sick and is constantly coughing/hacking – can you address this in some meaningful way?

    • We will follow the most stringent local, state and CDC guidelines that are in effect at the time. We anticipate that masks will still be required. Players showing unexplained symptoms will be asked to leave.

Presently the Westgate requires a temperature check to enter the building. They have automatic temperature scanners at every entrance. The deployment of our own touchless thermometers is yet to be determined.

    • No. We strongly recommend that participants be vaccinated but we will still be maintaining strict protocols to protect all the players. Staff that may come in contact with players will have been vaccinated.

  2. How many times an hour will the air be exchanged in the playing hall? Is there an air exchange system installed, HEPA air purifiers or how will ventilation and air exchange be assured? Will players be rapid tested before the tournament?

    • I don’t know the HVAC specifications but the Westgate meets or exceeds specifications required by the health department, including revisions due to Covid-19. The main ballroom has 18′ ceilings and has a capacity of 4 or 5 times our most optimistic attendance projections. I don’t think air flow will be an issue.

There are no plans for rapid testing at this time. The hotel policy will guide us.

  3. Please reconsider and don’t make masks mandatory for this event. All states have made the vaccine available to the most vulnerable. Furthermore, most states have made the vaccine available to anyone who wishes to take it.

And we are still three months away.

I believe there are many people who will not participate with this extra requirement.

Taking care of yourself and assessing risk is an individual choice. Please let the players decide what is best for them.

    • You’re wrong. There have been many OTB chess going on this whole pandemic and even with masks as a requirement, there are plenty of people playing and there have actually been waitlist for multiple tournaments. People will play even with masks.

    • ‘Taking care of yourself and assessing risk is an individual choice’….So a persons decision to NOT take precautions doesnt affect the people around them? Im not making this a political issue, its one of respect to those around you and you also might want to reflect on the simple workings of how a virus is passed my friend

  4. Is the tournament restricted to those who enter to compete, or are there also opportunities to volunteer? I’m assuming spectating is not an option. Thanks!

    • Use our contact page to let us know your interests and contact information. There may be some opportunity but our staff (including volunteers) must be vaccinated and must undergo a background check.
