Over-the-Board Chess Returns June 16-20

Nevada is relaxing (but not eliminating) restrictions, and we are confident that we can return to over the board chess with the Chess Event of the Year.

We have delayed accepting entries until we were (nearly) certain that we could proceed. Players who have carried their entries over from previous events will be added to the entry list manually so please be patient as we are doing this one at a time.

    • The Chess Festival is scheduled and hotels are booked years in advance. So the real question is “are you going to cancel again?” and the answer is no. We will do everything possible to keep our players safe, and we anticipate that enough players will be vaccinated by June to make the tournament viable. We will be posting our safety precautions in our FAQ soon.

We understand that some players will be unable or unwilling to attend an event in June. We hope to see them next year, or at other events which we may run in fall. Other players are chomping at the bit for opportunities to play and are willing to abide by our safety precautions.

  1. Is the tournament restricted to those who enter to compete, or are there also opportunities to volunteer? I’m assuming spectating is not an option. Thanks!

    • Use our contact page to let us know your interests and contact information. There may be some opportunity but our staff (including volunteers) must be vaccinated and must undergo a background check.

  2. what is the “commemorative set and board” that is offered for $20? is it just a plastic club set with an event-logo’d board? can we see a picture of it?

    • Refunds are available until the first round is paired. A $20 service charge is withheld to cover processing fees.

  3. HI,

I know the U2100 and U2300 sections are FIDE rated which means they must follow FIDE rules. However, the games played at the faster time controls in the 3-day and 2-day schedules aren’t FIDE rated. Therefore, will these games be played with FIDE rules or US Chess rules?

    Thanks

    • This question is asked often so the answer appears on our Frequently Asked Questions page.

The rounds played at faster time controls in the 2-day and 3-day schedules of FIDE rated sections cannot be FIDE rated. They are reported as byes in the report submitted to FIDE.

  4. I see that GM and IM norms are available. Is there a Candidate Master Title is also being awarded? what’s the norm in this event to achieve the title? I’m yet to play OTB

    • Abnu, the CM title is not norm based. A player needs to get a rating over 2200 FIDE for that title. So yes, it can be achieved by playing in any of the FIDE rated sections in this event.

  5. I understand they can’t be FIDE rated. My question was whether these games will follow FIDE rules or US Chess rules.

    • FIDE rules will apply to all games in the FIDE rated sections, even those games which cannot be FIDE rated.

    • We provide Chess Sets and boards. Players should bring their own increment-capable clocks. There will be a vendor selling clocks if you need to buy one.
